Stratford Archers

uganda appeal 2007

As you may be aware, we are currently collecting donations of your old and unused archery equipment to assist the Butabika Archery Club in Uganda.
Archery is a relatively new sport in Uganda, in 2005 there were 7 clubs with 85 archers but only 44 recurve training bows and 5 recurve competition bows.
The Butabika Archery Club facilities are very basic with a 25m range and targets made from shoe rubber, foam or eucalyptus bark. Properly manufactured strings are also not available.

So.... If you have any old equipment lying about and you would like to donate it please contact me.

Many thanks,
Josie.

An archer from Stratford Archery Club in the UK Andy Westwacott (left) hands over a donation of bows and arrows worth sh80m to Butabika and Luzira clubs yesterday
By Silvano Kibuuka

AN article in the Bow International magazine has earned Uganda archery clubs equipment worth over sh80m.
The appealing article about the plight of Butabika Archery Club was published last year by Kampala-based British writer, Kevin O'Connor.
The story prompted Stratford Archers Upon Avon club in the UK to launch a fundraising drive on top of soliciting used archery equipment they have now donated to the Ugandan clubs.
"We are a small group in Stratford but the article was challenging and we decided to assist,'' coach Daryn Raxlffee said at Luzira Prisons while he unveiled the equipment to players of Luzira and Butabika clubs yesterday.
Daryn was accompanied by the club press officer, Andy Westwacott. The two will train local archers for two weeks before they leave.
The kit includes 10 trainer bows, two tournament bows, four dozens arrows and protective gear.
Uganda Archery Federation (UAF) secretary Mustapha Mwesigye and national coach, Margaret Tumusiime, both of Butabika club, said they will present the kit to the federation next week.
"We are now assured of participating in international games," Mwesigye said.
An archery bow goes for up to sh7m, according to coach Tumusiime.
